Speaking to reporters yesterday, Tory said he doubted Harper's federal Conservatives could reverse the recently passed Liberal legislation recognizing same-sex marriages even if they wanted. "I think they would be unwise to reopen that issue," said Tory. "I think that the parliament has dealt with it, the courts have dealt with it, the decisions of the courts stand on the books, and that there are many other more important issues that people would prefer to see parliamentarians of any party address themselves to in the new parliament." Harper has said he would revisit the issue if the Conservatives form government. Tory has said previously that he thinks the issue has been dealt with and should be left alone in favour of issues such as health care, crime and the nation's finances. Yesterday his comments appeared to strengthen his own remarks as he was pressed by reporters to explain why he'd campaign with federal candidates who argue against same-sex marriage. "I think it's an important issue," Tory said. "It is a matter of human rights." Prior to Tory's media scrum yesterday, Liberal staff at Queen's Park circulated copies of Kitchener-Waterloo Record columns written by Conservative candidate Harold Albrecht. In them, Albrecht argues same-sex marriages "would succeed in wiping out an entire society in just one generation." "The reality in politics today in all parties is that you have people that have a variety of opinions on these issues," Tory said. http://www.torontosun.com/News/Election/2006/01/10/1387131-sun.html
