Could be anything? That's the problem with symbolism isn't it? It always assumes a symbolic meaning to everything. What's the symbolism of a cartouche? It's designed for the same purposes as a halo, after all. If you put a cartouche around a name why not put one around a head? SOme things which are given an esoteric meaning might have been purely practical in origin. It used to be thought that the cardinals crozier has a hook on the end to symbolise a shepherds crook. It turns out that it was put there so he could hang it on the branch of a tree to stop it rolling downhill when he took a dump. Exactly the same reason that the shepherds had them. There were we thinking they used them to snag wondering lambs.
