At 92, Dan Rather Finally Returns To CBS News

He left the network amid controversy, but the man who first brought viewers the story of the Kennedy assassination has returned to his roots. On CBS' Sunday Morning this week, Dan Rather finally returned to the place that made him a household name. He'd been absent for 18 years.

Have to say the video is pretty good, with a lot of highlights from his decades in the biz.

Dan Rather, at 92, on a life in news

It was Walter Cronkite who anchored CBS' breaking news coverage of the Kennedy assassination.

Re: At 92, Dan Rather Finally Returns To CBS News

Yes, yes we know it was Walter Cronkite who anchored the assassination of Kennedy, but Rather was the reporter on the ground.
In his book Rather also revealed the terror he felt when he reported the shooting, because it was Rather who called the hospital and asked about the president's condition and was told JKF was dead.
Rather then went on CBS to report what he had been told.
He writes about how after that a cold chill went through his body and he felt sick because he realized he did not confirm who he spoke to on the phone at the hospital.
He wrote how he realized his mistake and knew that if he was wrong and he had spoken to some random person, his career would be over.
So in a perverse kind of way it was actually good for Rather's career that Kennedy was indeed dead.

I once read that Rather spoke to a priest at the hospital.

Re: At 92, Dan Rather Finally Returns To CBS News

According to several accounts that I've read, Rather and a number of other journalists spoke to the two priests who left the hospital after giving JFK the Last Rites. One of the priests told the journalists "He's dead all right" when they asked him directly if the President had died. Rather also talked to the news director of CBS's Dallas affiliate, who had several friends on the hospital staff who had told him that Kennedy was essentially DOA. Rather was on the phone with CBS Radio and told the producer it was his belief that Kennedy was dead and was shocked when he suddenly heard radio anchorman Allan Jackson announcing Kennedy's death.

If you can find it on Youtube, scoped versions of CBS Radio's coverage of the assassination are available. You can hear the confusion after Jackson's announcement, based on Rather's comment, as they struggle to find a copy of the Star Spangled Banner to play. After a couple of false starts, including some instrumental music played at the wrong speed, they finally cue up the national anthem and get it rolling.

UPDATE - the audio can be heard here, beginning at about the 42:00 mark. Unfortunately, the local station cuts in before they actually play the anthem.

Just as a sidebar -- remember when Ronald Regan was shot?
ABC news anchor Frank Reynolds shouted his famous line, "Let's get this nailed down," after ABC received an erroneous report that Reagan aide James Brady had been shot and killed -- and it was not clear whether Reagan himself was shot or dead.
Reynolds took some flak for losing his cool live on the air, but in fact he made it clear ABC was not going to make a mistake on his watch.

I remember watching live when Al Haig announced "As of now I am in control here at the White House" which, regardless of what he actually meant (a message to allies and enemies that the US government was stable), sounded really bad.

My school had one of those TVs on 6 foot tall stands that would be wheeled out for special occasions - the signing of the Camp David Accord, the assassination attempts on Reagan and the Pope, and the Supreme Court announcing its decision on whether the Trudeau government could unilaterally patriate the constitution.

Hansa,
Yes the reason why Al Haig sounded so bad was when the president is shot the nuclear codes go to the Vice President, or failing that, the Speaker of the house... not to a Cabinet Secretary.
Hair sounded like he was staging a coup, even though in his mind he was trying to be reassuring to the American people.
