All I was saying was that there are plenty of real world examples that even if other people can't change your opinion about yourself, they can still treat you as-if what they want to believe about you is what is real.
What really happens is that you aren't allowed to have your own opinion about yourself anyway - even if you think it, your fake-parents or whatever rape your mind and know that you were remembering who you really are and what like you really are. How can you fight that if you are still learning to deal with a new body and language and everything, and there's nothing to suggest to you that what they want to be true about you isn't the case - except your own buried memories of your true self.
